Container gardening is a quick and easy way to inject some colour into your plot, particularly if you garden in a small space such as a patio, courtyard or balcony.

Some of the best winter plants for winter containers are those that serve as all-rounders – for example, dogwoods have red or blue berries, colourful foliage in autumn and striking stems in winter, while architectural grasses like carex provide invaluable year-round structure.

You will need

  • Multi-purpose compost
  • Medium to large pot or container
  • Skimmia
  • Miniature cyclamen
  • Heuchera
  • Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens'
  • Spring-flowering bulbs

Half fill your pot with compost, breaking up lumps as you go. Add your central, or backbone, plant first, taking care not to damage the roots.

Add the smaller plants next, packing them in tightly. Position the plants so they soften the edges of the pot.

Pop in the final plants and fill any gaps with more compost. Gently push spring-flowering bulbs into any spaces left between plants.

When your container is planted, water it thoroughly but gently to avoid spilling any over the edge of the pot.
